Middle school teacher and blogger Jane Yoo used wooden shims to create this decorative mirror. She and her husband live outside Toronto, Ontario. She started her blog, UrbaneJane.com, in 2010 to chronicle the renovation of their first home. "We needed furniture, but didn't have much money, so we refurbished thrift store finds," she says. "I had no idea how fun it would be—or how handy my husband was!"

Materials:

17 packages of 8" shims (Small wood wedges used to level objects. There are 12 per package; you need 190 total.)

Wood glue

Medium-grit sanding block

Primer (optional)

Orange and red latex paint (We used Benjamin Moore 2013-30 Jeweled Peach and 2010-10 Tomato Red.)

2" paintbrush

12" round wood panel

Pen

Newspaper

Hammer

Nails

Picture hanging kit

10" round mirror

Instant-bonding glue

Directions:

1. Arrange 5 shims on their edges next to one another so that the shim in the middle sticks out ¼" farther than the two on either side, and 1" farther than the ones on the outside. Glue them together and let dry. Repeat with remaining shims so you have 38 groups of 5.

2. Sand the faces and sides of your shims to smooth.

3. Prime (if desired) the shim groups; let dry. Paint half of the groups orange and the others red. Let dry.

4. Using wood panel, trace a 12" circle on the newspaper. Organize the shim groups (on their edges), around the circle, alternating between orange and red groups. (The tip of the red groups should rest 11/4" below the tip of the orange ones.) Carefully glue the shims together in this circular formation. Let dry.

5. Glue the wood panel to the back of the shim circle. Reinforce by hammering a nail into each shim group.

6. Attach the picture hanging kit to the panel according to the directions.

7. Center the mirror on the other side of the shim circle. Glue in place with instant-bonding glue and let dry.
